One of the classic vector games, Battlezone was unique in its two-joystick control method. You control a tank and your sole mission is to destroy as many tanks, missiles and UFO's as you can.
You move around the landscape pursuing the tanks which appear one at a time, the relative position of which is shown by the radar scanner at the top of the screen. UFO's also appear at random and move around the world but do not show up on the radar scanner.
The blocks (cubes, pryamids etc) located on the world hamper your movement but also provide an effective barrier against enemy shots.
After a set score missiles appear which move a lot faster and rapidly home in on your position following a zig-zag pattern.
Later in the game supertanks appear which move faster and also fire more rapidly.
Shooting a tank: 1,000 points.
Shooting a missile: 2,000 points.
Shooting the UFO: 5,000 points.
Starting lives can be set to 2, 3, 4 or 5 (default is 3).
Missile appearance can be set to 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 or 30,000 points (default is 10,000).
Extra life can be set to off, 15,000 and 100,000, 20,000 and 100,000 or 50,000 and 100,000 (default is 15,000 and 100,000).
The first few tanks can be caught and destroyed before they fire a shot at you. Just move straight towards them and fire when you are close to them.
You can outmanoeuver enemy shots by moving backwards and veering to the left or right so they pass you.
Note that a tank which is offscreen can still fire at and hit you.
To destroy a missile constantly move backwards and wait until the last second before firing, when it is heading drectly towards you.
The UFO's appear randomly but you should try to destroy them as they are worth the most points.
Use the blocks to hide from an enemy tank, but note that shots can creep round the edge of blocks, especially pyramids!
