TUTANKHAM
Manufacturer: Stern
Year: 1982
Personal hiscore - 62,000

You are the intrepid explorer on his quest through the labyrinths in search of the treasure of Tutankham. You are armed with a gun which can only fire horizontally, and a limited supply of flash bombs which destroy all monsters on screen when detonated.

On your way through the mazes you can collect valuable rings and lanterns for points, and you must get the keys to open the doors which appear later in each level.

Scattered through each maze are monster generators which create monsters which will roam the maze to hinder your progress, and these can be killed with your gun. The monsters come in various guises; from slow moving predictable snakes to speedy, more intelligent bats.

Each level is also against the clock, as there is a timer at the top left of the screen just below your score which progressively decreases. If you do not complete the level before the timer reaches zero, you lose the ability to fire. There are also vertical tunnels which you must move through to cross from one section of the maze to another.

A radar scanner is provided at the top centre of the screen to assist you, which shows you the position of the maze exit, monsters and yourself.

The difficulty increases on later levels by increasing the number of monsters which appear, and the speed at which they are generated. There are also faster and tougher new monsters to contend with. Also, there are more doors to open, and this involves a lot of backtracking through each screen as you can only carry one key at a time.

An extra life is awarded at 30,000 points.

Playing hints/tips

o Flash bombs can only be used once per level, and remember you only have 3 available for the whole game. Use them sparingly, preferably only in a life-threatening situation.

o You can sit in a safe place close to a monster generator and simply pick the monsters off as they appear. Most monsters follow a set pattern of movement so it is quite easy to predict which way they will turn and wait in a place where it is easy to kill them as they appear in front or behind you. Remember to watch the timer though!

o The lanterns and rings are quite often a deadly diversion as they are sometimes placed in dead end vertical passages. Assess the risks carefully before collecting them.

o Be careful when entering vertical tunnels as you cannot shoot monsters on the other side until they are level with you in a horizontal direction.

o A carefully timed shot can kill a monster in a vertical tunnel, but only when fired exactly when the monster moves into the square in which you are stood.
